Cloudkill is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.
01
Official card text
All creatures get -X/-X until end of turn, where X is the greatest mana value of a commander you own on the battlefield or in the command zone.
How it works : Cloudkill
Original English text — Wizards of the Coast / Scryfall
- #1· Wizards of the Coast
If your commander is under the control of another player as Cloudkill resolves, it is still on the battlefield and will still be used to determine the value of X.
No other card is named in this ruling.
