Dowsing Device // Geode Grotto is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.

Complete guide
Dowsing Device is a versatile red artifact that fuels aggressive strategies by providing immediate buffs to your creatures. As your collection of artifacts grows, it transforms into Geode Grotto, a land that can grant massive power boosts and haste during your main phase. This card is a must-have for artifact-centric decks looking to close out games quickly.
What Dowsing Device Does
Dowsing Device has a triggered ability that fires whenever it or another artifact enters the battlefield under your control. When this happens, you can give a target creature +1/+0 and haste until the end of the turn. After the buff resolves, the game checks how many artifacts you control; if you have four or more, Dowsing Device transforms into its land side, Geode Grotto.
Resolving the Transformation
The transformation check happens as part of the resolution of the triggered ability. First, you apply the +1/+0 and haste to your target creature (if you chose one). Then, the game counts your artifacts. If the count is four or higher, you transform Dowsing Device. Because the transformation is part of the trigger's resolution, you cannot respond between the buff and the transformation.
Utilizing Geode Grotto
Once transformed, Geode Grotto acts as a land that taps for red mana. Its special ability costs two generic and one red mana, plus tapping the land, to give a creature haste and +X/+0, where X is your current artifact count. Note that this ability can only be activated as a sorcery, meaning during your main phase while the stack is empty.
Common Mistakes
A common mistake involves the timing of the X value for Geode Grotto. The value of X is determined only at the moment the ability resolves. If you lose or gain artifacts later in the turn, the power bonus already granted to the creature does not change. Also, remember that the initial Dowsing Device trigger is 'up to one target,' so you can still transform it even if you have no creatures to target.
Interaction examples
Sol Ring
Arcane SignetIf you control Dowsing Device and cast Sol Ring, Dowsing Device triggers. If you then cast Arcane Signet, it triggers again. If these additions bring your total artifact count to four, Dowsing Device will transform into Geode Grotto upon the resolution of the latest trigger.
When you play Sol Ring while Dowsing Device is on the battlefield, the Device triggers. You can target a creature you just played to give it haste, allowing it to attack immediately. If the Sol Ring was your fourth artifact, the Device flips to Geode Grotto, providing you with a red mana source for the following turn.

- #1· Wizards of the Coast
The value of X for Geode Grotto's last ability is determined only as it resolves. Once that happens, the value of X won't change later in the turn even if the number of artifacts you control changes.
