Carte Magic Heroism

Heroism is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.

Official card text

Sacrifice a white creature: For each attacking red creature, prevent all combat damage that would be dealt by that creature this turn unless its controller pays {2}{R}.

Complete guide

Heroism is a classic white enchantment that forces red-aligned aggressive decks to pay a heavy price for their offense. By sacrificing your own white creatures, you can create a taxing barrier that neutralizes red attackers unless their controller spends additional mana. It is a powerful defensive tool that scales perfectly against large boards of red creatures.

How Heroism Works

Heroism features an activated ability that costs no mana to activate, but instead requires you to sacrifice a white creature. When this ability resolves, it creates a replacement effect for every currently attacking red creature. For each of those creatures, the combat damage it would deal this turn is prevented unless its controller pays {2}{R} immediately. Note that this payment is checked on a creature-by-creature basis.

Step-by-Step Resolution

First, ensure your opponent has declared red creatures as attackers. Second, activate Heroism by sacrificing a white creature and putting the ability on the stack. Third, as the ability resolves, your opponent must decide for each red creature whether they will pay {2}{R}. If they choose not to pay, or cannot afford to, that specific creature's combat damage is prevented for the rest of the turn. This decision and payment happen during the resolution of the ability, not during the damage step.

Common Pitfalls

A common mistake is thinking you can wait until the combat damage step to pay the cost; the official rulings state the cost must be paid exactly when the ability resolves. Additionally, paying the {2}{R} only stops Heroism from preventing the damage. If another effect, such as a Fog effect, is also preventing damage, paying for Heroism will not bypass that other effect. Finally, remember that Heroism only checks for creatures that are already 'attacking' when the ability resolves.

Strategic Timing

To get the most value, wait until your opponent has declared all their attackers. If you activate Heroism too early (such as during the Beginning of Combat step), there are no 'attacking red creatures' yet, and the ability will do nothing. By waiting for the Declare Attackers step, you ensure every red threat is targeted by the tax.

Interaction examples

Stacking the Tax

If you have Ghostly Prison on the battlefield, your opponent must first pay {2} just to declare a creature as an attacker. After they pay that and attack, you can sacrifice a white creature to Heroism. This forces the opponent to pay an additional {2}{R} per red creature if they actually want those creatures to deal damage, effectively creating a double-tax situation.

Generating Resources to Pay

If your opponent is using Smothering Tithe to generate Treasure tokens, they might have the extra mana available to pay for Heroism's tax. When you activate Heroism, your opponent can sacrifice their Treasures to produce the {2}{R} required to let their red creatures deal damage normally, bypassing your defensive shield.

  1. #1· Wizards of the Coast

The cost to avoid the penalty must be paid when the ability resolves. You can’t wait until later to do so.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  2. #2· Wizards of the Coast

Paying the Heroism cost to allow a creature to deal damage does not prevent other effects from preventing it from dealing damage. Paying the cost only prevents the Heroism effect.

No other card is named in this ruling.
