Joust is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.
Official card text
Choose target creature you control and target creature you don't control. The creature you control gets +2/+1 until end of turn if it's a Knight. Then those creatures fight each other. (Each deals damage equal to its power to the other.)
How it works : Joust
Original English text — Wizards of the Coast / Scryfall
- #1· Wizards of the Coast
You can't cast Joust unless you choose both a creature you control and a creature you don't control as targets.
No other card is named in this ruling.
- #2· Wizards of the Coast
The target creature you control gets +2/+1 only if it's a Knight as Joust resolves. It'll still fight if it doesn't get +2/+1.
No other card is named in this ruling.
- #3· Wizards of the Coast
If either target is an illegal target as Joust tries to resolve, neither creature will deal or be dealt damage.
No other card is named in this ruling.
- #4· Wizards of the Coast
If the creature you control is an illegal target as Joust tries to resolve, no creature gets +2/+1. If that creature is a legal target but the creature you don't control isn't, it still gets +2/+1 until end of turn if it's a Knight.
No other card is named in this ruling.
Interactions with other cards
These cards' text mentions Joust.

Joust Through deals 3 damage to target attacking or blocking creature. You gain 1 life.

When Outfitted Jouster enters, conjure a card named Steelclaw Lance and a card named Brawler's Plate onto the battlefield and attach them to Outfitted Jouster. If damage would be dealt to Outfitted Jouster while it's equipped, prevent that damage. When damage is prevented this way, sacrifice an Equipment attached to Outfitted Jouster.
