Tactical Arrival and Stationing

When Specimen Freighter enters the battlefield, its triggered ability allows you to target up to two non-Spacecraft creatures and return them to their owners' hands. To turn this artifact into a creature, you must use the Station ability. By tapping another creature you control as a sorcery, you place charge counters on the Freighter equal to that creature's power. Once it has nine or more charge counters, it becomes an artifact creature with Flying.

The Threshold of 9+

The 9+ threshold is a state-based check. As long as Specimen Freighter has nine or more charge counters, it is an artifact creature. If the number of counters drops below nine, it ceases to be a creature and reverts to being just an artifact Spacecraft. While it is a creature, it gains Flying and retains its ability to mill the defending player four cards whenever it attacks.

Strategic Milling

The mill ability triggers specifically when Specimen Freighter is declared as an attacker. This means it must already be a creature (via the 9+ counters) to be eligible to attack. Even if the Freighter is removed from combat or the battlefield after the trigger, the defending player will still be required to mill four cards.

Boosting Station Power

Vanquisher's Banner

If you have Vanquisher's Banner on the battlefield naming a specific type, and you tap a creature of that type to activate Station, the Freighter receives counters based on the creature's current power (including the +1/+1 bonus). This helps you reach the 9+ threshold much faster.

Fueling the Freighter

Gilded Lotus

While Gilded Lotus provides the heavy mana required to cast Specimen Freighter, it cannot be used to activate the Station ability because Station requires tapping a creature, not an artifact. However, the mana from Gilded Lotus can help you cast the creatures you need to subsequently tap for Stationing.
