Carte Magic Topography Tracker

Topography Tracker is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.

01

Official card text

When this creature enters, create a Map token. (It's an artifact with "{1}, {T}, Sacrifice this token: Target creature you control explores. Activate only as a sorcery.") If a creature you control would explore, instead it explores, then it explores again.

Complete guide

Navigate your way to victory with Topography Tracker, a Merfolk Scout that ensures you never lose your way. This green creature not only provides immediate value by creating a Map token but also acts as a powerful force multiplier for any exploration your creatures undertake.

Double the Discovery

Topography Tracker features a static replacement effect that alters how exploration works for your creatures. Whenever a creature you control is instructed to explore, it instead explores, and then immediately explores again. This applies to any source of exploration, whether it is from a Map token, a triggered ability, or a spell. Each exploration is a separate event that resolves sequentially within the same ability resolution.

Resolving the Explore Action

When a creature explores, you reveal the top card of your library. If it is a land, you put it into your hand. If it is not a land, you place a +1/+1 counter on the exploring creature and then choose whether to leave the card on top of your library or put it into your graveyard. Because Topography Tracker makes the creature explore twice, you perform this entire sequence twice. If you leave a non-land card on top during the first exploration, you will reveal that same card again during the second exploration unless you have a way to move it.

Common Mistakes and Timing

One common mistake is thinking players can react between the two explorations. Once an ability that causes exploration begins to resolve, no player can take actions until the entire process—including the second exploration granted by the Tracker—is complete. Additionally, if the creature leaves the battlefield before the ability resolves, it still explores. While it won't receive +1/+1 counters if it's gone, you still reveal cards, can put lands into your hand, and can choose to bin non-land cards.

Strategy: When to Play It

Topography Tracker is most effective in decks that rely on +1/+1 counters or land smoothing. Since it generates its own Map token, it is a self-contained engine. You should play it when you have other creatures ready to benefit from the Map or when you need to dig through your library for specific resources while growing your board presence.

Interaction examples

Using the Map Token

With Topography Tracker on the battlefield, you activate the Map token's ability targeting Solemn Simulacrum. Because of the Tracker, the Simulacrum explores twice. First, you reveal the top card; if it's a land, it goes to your hand. Then, you immediately reveal the new top card for the second exploration. If both cards are non-lands, Solemn Simulacrum ends up with two +1/+1 counters.

Filtering with Sakura-Tribe Elder

You control Topography Tracker and Sakura-Tribe Elder. You sacrifice a Map token targeting Sakura-Tribe Elder. On the first explore, you reveal a non-land card you don't want. You choose to put it into your graveyard. Then, the Tracker's effect causes the Elder to explore a second time, revealing a brand-new card from the top of your deck, effectively letting you see more cards and grow your Elder into a 3/3.

How it works : Topography Tracker

Original English text — Wizards of the Coast / Scryfall

  1. #1· Wizards of the Coast

If an ability instructs a creature to explore, its controller reveals the top card of their library. If it's a land card, they'll put it into their hand. Otherwise, they'll put a +1/+1 counter on that creature, then choose to either leave that card on top of their library or put it into their graveyard.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  2. #2· Wizards of the Coast

Once an ability that causes a creature to explore begins to resolve, no player may take any other actions until it's done. Notably, opponents can't try to remove the exploring creature after you reveal a nonland card but before it receives a counter.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  3. #3· Wizards of the Coast

If no card is revealed, most likely because that player's library is empty, the exploring creature receives a +1/+1 counter.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  4. #4· Wizards of the Coast

If a resolving spell or ability instructs a specific creature to explore but that creature has left the battlefield, the creature still explores. If you reveal a nonland card this way, you won't put a +1/+1 counter on anything, but you may put the revealed card into your graveyard. Effects that trigger "whenever a creature explores" trigger as appropriate.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  5. #5· Wizards of the Coast

Some spells or abilities might cause a creature to explore multiple times in a row. If you reveal a nonland card when a creature explores and leave it on top of your library, then the creature explores again immediately afterwards, you'll reveal the same card again.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  6. #6· Wizards of the Coast

In some unusual cases, noncreature permanents may explore. For example, if the creature card returned by Defossilize is somehow not a creature once it's on the battlefield, it can still explore. You'll take all the same actions, and you may end up putting a +1/+1 counter on the permanent. (Note that some effects target a creature, and those effects would still require a legal target to have it explore.)

No other card is named in this ruling.

  7. #7· Wizards of the Coast

Map tokens are a kind of predefined token. Each one is a colorless artifact with the artifact subtype Map and the ability "{1}, {T}, Sacrifice this artifact: Target creature you control explores. Activate only as a sorcery."
