Windrider Eel is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.
Official card text
Flying Landfall — Whenever a land you control enters, this creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn.
Complete guide
Windrider Eel is a classic example of the Landfall mechanic, turning every land placement into a significant aerial threat. This elusive Fish can quickly grow to lethal proportions, making it a staple for decks that focus on mana ramp and high-impact turns. Its ability to fly ensures that the extra power translates directly into damage against your opponent.
Harnessing the Landfall Trigger
Windrider Eel features Landfall, a triggered ability that watches for lands entering the battlefield under your control. Every time a land enters, the Eel gains +2/+2 until the end of the current turn. This applies whether you played the land as your normal action for the turn or if an effect put it there.
Step-by-Step Resolution
When a land enters the battlefield, the Eel's ability is placed on the stack. If multiple lands enter at once, or if you have multiple permanents with landfall, you choose the order in which these abilities are placed on the stack. The abilities resolve one at a time, each giving the Eel its bonus. Note that the Eel must be on the battlefield when the land enters to trigger; if they enter simultaneously, the Eel will see the land and trigger correctly.
Strategic Timing and Common Pitfalls
Timing is everything with Windrider Eel. Because the bonus only lasts until end of turn, you typically want your lands to enter during your first main phase or during combat. A common mistake is assuming that a permanent already on the battlefield becoming a land (like a creature turning into a Forest) will trigger Landfall; it will not. Only a permanent actually 'entering' as a land counts.
Interaction examples
Solemn SimulacrumWith Windrider Eel on the battlefield, you cast Solemn Simulacrum. When the Golem enters, its ability triggers, allowing you to search for a basic land and put it onto the battlefield. As that land enters, Windrider Eel's Landfall ability triggers, granting it +2/+2. If you also play a land from your hand that turn, the Eel will get another +2/+2 for a total of +4/+4.
Roaming ThroneIf you control Roaming Throne and chose 'Fish' as it entered, its static ability applies to Windrider Eel. When a land enters the battlefield, the Eel's Landfall ability triggers twice instead of once. This means every single land drop now provides a massive +4/+4 buff to your Eel.
