Carte Magic Young Pyromancer

Young Pyromancer is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.

01

Official card text

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, create a 1/1 red Elemental creature token.

Complete guide

Young Pyromancer is a classic red staple that rewards you for doing what red does best: slinging spells. By turning every instant and sorcery into a board presence, this Human Shaman can quickly overwhelm your opponent with a swarm of tokens.

Elemental Generation

The ability of Young Pyromancer is a triggered ability that watches for whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell. Each time you perform the action of casting such a spell, you create a 1/1 red Elemental creature token. This effect is mandatory; if you cast the spell, you get the token.

Timing and Resolution

When you cast an instant or sorcery, Young Pyromancer's ability triggers and goes on the stack on top of that spell. This means the ability resolves first, creating the Elemental token before the original spell actually happens. Even if your opponent counters your spell, the ability has already triggered and you will still receive your token.

Common Mistakes

A common misconception is that the token can be used as part of the spell that created it. Since the token is created only after the spell is fully cast (including paying all costs), you cannot sacrifice the resulting Elemental to pay a cost for the spell that triggered the ability. Additionally, casting creatures, artifacts, or enchantments will not trigger this ability, even if they have flash.

Maximizing the Swarm

To get the most out of this card, you should include a high density of low-cost instants and sorceries. This allows you to generate multiple tokens in a single turn, providing you with blockers or a wide attacking force that can benefit from other 'wide' board synergies.

Interaction examples

Casting with Mana Acceleration

While Young Pyromancer is on the battlefield, you tap Ornithopter of Paradise for mana to help cast an instant spell. The moment you finish casting that spell, Young Pyromancer triggers. You create a 1/1 red Elemental token first, and then your instant spell resolves.

Synergy with Combat Damage

You cast a sorcery to create an Elemental token with Young Pyromancer. On your next turn, you attack with that Elemental and Professional Face-Breaker. If both deal combat damage to a player, Professional Face-Breaker's ability triggers, creating a Treasure token because your creatures dealt damage.

Response to a Counterspell

You have Young Pyromancer on the battlefield and cast a sorcery spell. Your opponent responds with a counterspell. Even though your sorcery is removed from the stack and sent to the graveyard, Young Pyromancer's ability still resolves, and you still get your 1/1 red Elemental creature token.

  1. #1· Wizards of the Coast

An ability that triggers when a player casts a spell resolves before the spell that caused it to trigger, but after targets have been chosen for that spell. It resolves even if that spell is countered.
