The primary function of Careful Study is to dig through your library. You draw two cards first, which gives you more information before you decide which two cards to discard from your hand. It is important to note that because you discard the same number of cards you drew, this spell results in a net loss of one card from your hand (the spell itself).

Step-by-Step Resolution

When you cast Careful Study, it goes onto the stack. Upon resolution, you first draw two cards from your library. Only after those cards are in your hand do you choose two cards from your entire hand to discard. Finally, Careful Study is put into your graveyard. You cannot choose to discard fewer than two cards unless your hand is empty after drawing.

Common Pitfalls

A frequent mistake is forgetting that this is a Sorcery, meaning it cannot be used to react to an opponent's spell or at the end of their turn. Additionally, players sometimes confuse this with 'looting' effects that draw one and discard one; since this is a 'two-for-two' exchange, you must be careful not to empty your hand too quickly if you don't have graveyard synergies ready.

When to Cast It

You should play Careful Study when you need to find specific answers or when you want to move specific cards, like creatures with reanimation potential or spells with Flashback, into your graveyard. It is most effective in the early turns to set up your game plan.

Cast Preordain to Scry 2, putting unneeded cards on the bottom of your library. If you leave a powerful card on top, you can then resolve Careful Study to draw that card and the one beneath it, then discard two other cards that were already stuck in your hand.
