Consuming Aberration is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.
Official card text
Consuming Aberration's power and toughness are each equal to the number of cards in your opponents' graveyards. Whenever you cast a spell, each opponent reveals cards from the top of their library until they reveal a land card, then puts those cards into their graveyard.
Complete guide
Consuming Aberration is a terrifying Horror that grows stronger as your opponents' resources dwindle. It serves as both a massive threat on the battlefield and a consistent engine for milling your opponents' libraries every time you act. By turning every spell you cast into a milling tool, it rapidly inflates its own power and toughness.
A Growing Menace
Consuming Aberration features a characteristic-defining ability that sets its power and toughness equal to the total number of cards in all your opponents' graveyards. This ability is active in all zones, including your library, your hand, and the graveyard itself. As long as your opponents have cards in their discard piles, this Horror will have the stats to match.
The Mill Engine Step-by-Step
Whenever you cast any spell, the Aberration's second ability triggers. First, you cast a spell and pay its costs; the ability then goes on the stack above that spell. Each opponent must then reveal cards from the top of their library one by one until they hit a land card. Finally, all revealed cards—including the land—are placed into their respective graveyards. Because the trigger resolves first, the Aberration will usually grow in size before your original spell even finishes resolving.
Common Pitfalls
One common mistake is forgetting that the ability triggers on the 'cast,' not when the spell resolves. Even if your opponent uses a counterspell to stop your original spell, the Consuming Aberration trigger has already been placed on the stack and will still resolve. Additionally, if an opponent has no land cards left in their library, they simply reveal their entire library and put every card into their graveyard.
When to Deploy
This card is most effective in multiplayer formats like Commander, as it counts cards in all opponents' graveyards simultaneously. To maximize its impact, play it when you have low-cost spells held back in your hand, allowing you to trigger the mill effect multiple times in a single turn to suddenly boost the Aberration's power for a lethal swing.
Interaction examples
Solemn SimulacrumWith Consuming Aberration on the battlefield, you cast Solemn Simulacrum. The Aberration's ability triggers immediately. Your opponent reveals cards until they hit a land and puts them all into their graveyard. Only after this mill effect is finished does the Solemn Simulacrum resolve and enter the battlefield. The Aberration's power and toughness will increase instantly as those new cards hit the opponent's graveyard.
Roaming ThroneIf you have Roaming Throne on the battlefield and chose 'Horror' as its type, Consuming Aberration's cast trigger will fire an additional time. When you cast any spell, each opponent will have to reveal cards until they hit a land, put them in the graveyard, and then repeat that entire process a second time. This effectively doubles the speed at which you mill your opponents and grow your Aberration.
