Fierce EmpathHow it works & interactions with other cards

Finding the Big Threats

The core function of Fierce Empath is its 'enters the battlefield' ability. When it successfully arrives on the field, you have the option to search your library for a creature card with a mana value (MV) of 6 or greater. This specifically targets the top end of your curve, allowing you to bypass the randomness of drawing and directly access your game-ending creatures.

Resolution Step by Step

When Fierce Empath enters, its ability is placed on the stack. Once it resolves, you choose whether to search your library. If you do, you look for a creature card with mana value 6 or more. You must reveal the chosen card to all players to prove it meets the criteria. Finally, you move that card to your hand and shuffle your library. Remember, the search is optional; you can choose not to search if you prefer.

Mana Values and X-Spells

A common point of confusion involves cards with 'X' in their mana cost. While a card is in your library, X is always treated as 0. Therefore, a creature that costs {X}{G}{G} would have a mana value of 2 while in the library, making it an invalid target for Fierce Empath. Always count only the printed mana symbols on the card when determining if its mana value is 6 or greater.

Strategic Timing

Fierce Empath is best played when you have stabilized your board and are ready to transition into a winning position. Since it only costs three mana, it leaves you with resources to potentially cast the creature you just found in later turns. It is also an excellent target for 'blink' effects or graveyard recursion to repeatedly tutor for multiple threats throughout the game.

Interaction examples

Searching for a Finisher

You cast Fierce Empath for {2}{G}. Upon resolution, you search your library for a creature like a Wurmcoil Engine (MV 6) or a Pelakka Wurm (MV 7). You reveal the card, put it into your hand, and shuffle. You now have a high-impact threat ready for your next turn.

Understanding Mana Value Limits

Solemn Simulacrum

When Fierce Empath's ability resolves, you look through your library. You see Solemn Simulacrum, but because its mana value is 4, it does not meet the '6 or greater' requirement. You must pass over it and find a larger creature instead.

Early Game Setup

Sakura-Tribe Elder

On turn two, you sacrifice Sakura-Tribe Elder to get a basic land onto the battlefield. This extra mana allows you to cast Fierce Empath on turn three, which then searches for a massive 6-mana creature that you will be able to cast sooner thanks to the initial ramp provided by the Elder.
