Carte Magic Flashback

Flashback is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.

01

Official card text

Target instant or sorcery card in your graveyard gains flashback until end of turn. The flashback cost is equal to its mana cost. (You may cast that card from your graveyard for its flashback cost. Then exile it.)

Complete guide

Harness the power of your past with the spell Flashback, a unique red instant that lets you reuse your most impactful resources. By granting a card in your graveyard the flashback keyword, you ensure that your spells are never truly gone until you say so. This card is perfect for decks that rely on recurring powerful effects to overwhelm the opponent.

What It Does

Flashback is a one-mana instant that targets an instant or sorcery card in your graveyard. It grants that card the 'flashback' ability until the end of the turn, with a flashback cost equal to the card's original mana cost. This allows you to cast that spell directly from your graveyard as if it were in your hand, though doing so results in the card being exiled forever once it leaves the stack.

How It Resolves Step by Step

When you cast Flashback, you first choose a legal target: an instant or sorcery card currently in your graveyard. Once the spell resolves, that card gains the flashback keyword until the end of the current turn. To utilize this, you must follow the timing rules of the granted spell; for example, if you target a sorcery, you can only cast it during your main phase when the stack is empty. When you pay the mana cost to cast the card from your graveyard, it moves to the stack. Regardless of whether the spell resolves or is countered, the flashback replacement effect ensures it is placed into exile instead of back into the graveyard.

Common Mistakes

A frequent error is trying to pay alternative costs, like Overload or Evoke, when using flashback; however, flashback itself is an alternative cost, and you cannot apply two alternative costs to the same spell. You can, however, pay additional costs such as Kicker. Note that if a card has no mana cost (like certain suspend cards), you cannot cast it via Flashback because it has no cost to pay. Also, remember that the spell must leave the graveyard and be cast before the turn ends, or the keyword will expire.

When to Play It

Flashback is best used when you have excess mana and a high-impact spell in your graveyard that can swing the game in your favor. It provides excellent redundancy for removal or card draw spells. It is also an effective way to surprise an opponent by casting a defensive instant from your graveyard during their turn, provided you cast the Flashback spell itself during that same turn.

Interaction examples

Doubling Up on Burn

If you have a Lightning Bolt in your graveyard, you cast Flashback targeting it. The Lightning Bolt now has a flashback cost of {R}. You may then pay {R} to cast Lightning Bolt from your graveyard to deal 3 damage to a target. Once the Lightning Bolt resolves, it is exiled.

Flexible Removal

You cast Flashback targeting Abrade in your graveyard. Until end of turn, you can cast Abrade for its mana cost of {1}{R}. When you cast it from the graveyard, you still get to choose between dealing 3 damage to a creature or destroying an artifact. Once the choice is made and the spell finishes, Abrade is exiled.

Managing Mana with Treasures

If Strike It Rich is in your graveyard, you can target it with Flashback. Even though Strike It Rich already has its own flashback cost of {2}{R}, the Flashback spell grants it a new flashback ability with a cost equal to its mana cost, which is only {R}. This allows you to cast it more cheaply for {R} to create a Treasure token before it is exiled.

How it works : Flashback

Original English text — Wizards of the Coast / Scryfall

  1. #1· Wizards of the Coast

If a card with no mana cost gains flashback, it has no flashback cost. It can't be cast this way.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  2. #2· Wizards of the Coast

If you cast a spell with flashback, you can't pay any alternative costs. You can pay additional costs such as kicker costs. If the spell has any mandatory additional costs, you must pay those to cast the spell with flashback.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  3. #3· Wizards of the Coast

A spell cast using flashback will always be exiled afterward, whether it resolves, is countered, or leaves the stack in some other way.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  4. #4· Wizards of the Coast

If a card with flashback is put into your graveyard during your turn, you can cast it if it's legal to do so before any other player can take any actions.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  5. #5· Wizards of the Coast

You can cast a spell using flashback even if it was somehow put into your graveyard without having been cast.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  6. #6· Wizards of the Coast

You must still follow any timing restrictions and permissions, including those based on the card's type. For instance, you can cast a sorcery using flashback only when you could normally cast a sorcery.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  7. #7· Wizards of the Coast

If you cast an instant or sorcery with {X} in its mana cost this way, you still choose the value of X as part of casting the spell and pay that cost.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  8. #8· Wizards of the Coast

"Flashback [cost]" means "You may cast this card from your graveyard if the resulting spell is an instant or sorcery spell by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost" and "If the flashback cost was paid, exile this card instead of putting it anywhere else any time it would leave the stack."

No other card is named in this ruling.

  9. #9· Wizards of the Coast

To determine the total cost of a spell, start with the mana cost or alternative cost (such as a flashback cost) you're paying, add any cost increases, then apply any cost reductions. The mana value of the spell is determined only by its mana cost, no matter what the total cost to cast the spell was.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  10. #10· Wizards of the Coast

If a card has multiple instances of flashback, you may choose any of its flashback costs to pay.

No other card is named in this ruling.
