Moodmark Painter is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.
Official card text
Undergrowth — When this creature enters, target creature gains menace and gets +X/+0 until end of turn, where X is the number of creature cards in your graveyard. (It can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.)
How it works : Moodmark Painter
Original English text — Wizards of the Coast / Scryfall
- #1· Wizards of the Coast
The value of X is determined only as the undergrowth ability resolves. If the number of creature cards in your graveyard changes later in the turn, the target creature is unaffected.
No other card is named in this ruling.
- #2· Wizards of the Coast
If there are no creature cards in your graveyard, the target creature just gains menace until end of turn.
No other card is named in this ruling.
- #3· Wizards of the Coast
Creature cards with other types, such as artifact creature cards, count for undergrowth abilities.
No other card is named in this ruling.
- #4· Wizards of the Coast
Because tokens aren't cards, they never count for undergrowth abilities.
No other card is named in this ruling.
