Carte Magic Necroduality

Necroduality is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.

01

Official card text

Whenever a nontoken Zombie you control enters, create a token that's a copy of that creature.

Complete guide

Double your undead army with Necroduality, a powerful enchantment that rewards you for summoning your zombie horde. Every time a fresh, nontoken Zombie joins your side of the battlefield, this card ensures a spectral twin rises alongside it. Using Necroduality correctly allows you to overwhelm opponents with sheer numbers and repeated enter-the-battlefield effects.

A Mirror for the Macabre

Necroduality features a triggered ability that watches for nontoken Zombies entering the battlefield under your control. When the condition is met, the ability goes on the stack and, upon resolution, creates a token that is an exact copy of the entering creature. Because the token itself is a token, it will not trigger Necroduality again, preventing an infinite loop of copies.

Copying the Undead

The token created copies the printed characteristics of the original card. It includes the name, mana cost, types, and all abilities. However, it does not copy any counters, Auras, or temporary power and toughness changes that might be affecting the original creature. If the original creature has an 'enters the battlefield' ability, that ability will trigger a second time for the token copy.

Timing and Strategy

To get the most out of Necroduality, you want to cast it early before you play your high-impact Zombie creatures. It is especially potent in decks that utilize 'lords'—creatures that buff other Zombies—as the token copy will benefit from and contribute to these team-wide bonuses. Remember that if the original Zombie is destroyed before the Necroduality trigger resolves, the game uses 'last known information' to create the token copy based on what the creature looked like just before it left.

Interaction examples

Doubling Down on the Horde

With Necroduality on the battlefield, you cast a nontoken Zombie creature spell. When that creature successfully enters the battlefield, Necroduality's ability triggers. When it resolves, you create a Copy token of that Zombie. Both the original and the token now exist on the field, effectively doubling your board presence for a single card investment.

Taxing Through Duplication

If you have Rhystic Study and Necroduality in play, your priority is to protect your enchantments while building a board. While Rhystic Study taxes your opponent's spells to give you card draw, Necroduality ensures that every Zombie card you draw and cast provides twice the value. The opponent must choose between paying the tax for Rhystic Study or letting you find more Zombies to double.

Defensive Scaling

Using Propaganda alongside Necroduality creates a formidable defensive wall. Propaganda makes it expensive for your opponents to attack you. By using Necroduality to create twice as many Zombie blockers, you make it even harder for an opponent to find a profitable attack, as they must pay mana just to be blocked by your free token copies.

How it works : Necroduality

Original English text — Wizards of the Coast / Scryfall

  1. #1· Wizards of the Coast

The token copies exactly what was printed on the original permanent and nothing else (unless that permanent is copying something else; see below). It doesn’t copy whether that permanent is tapped or untapped, whether it has any counters on it or Auras and Equipment attached to it, or any non-copy effects that have changed its power, toughness, types, color, or so on.

  2. #2· Wizards of the Coast

If the copied permanent is copying something else, then the token enters as whatever that permanent copied.

  3. #3· Wizards of the Coast

Any “enters” abilities of the copied permanent will trigger when the token enters. Any “as [this permanent] enters” or “[this permanent] enters with” abilities of the copied permanent will also work.

No other card is named in this ruling.
