Prized Statue is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.
Official card text
When this artifact enters or is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, create a Treasure token. (It's an artifact with ", Sacrifice this token: Add one mana of any color.")
Complete guide
Prized Statue is a versatile artifact that provides value both when it arrives and when it departs. This card serves as a reliable mana fixer and ramp piece, ensuring you get your resources back whether it stays on the board or is destroyed. Understanding its triggered abilities is key to maximizing your artifact-based strategies.
Double the Treasure
Prized Statue features a triggered ability that triggers under two specific conditions: when it enters the battlefield and when it is put into a graveyard from the battlefield. In both instances, you create a Treasure token. Because these are separate triggers, a single Prized Statue will typically generate at least two Treasure tokens over its lifecycle.
Resolving the Trigger Step-by-Step
First, the Prized Statue enters the battlefield, placing the first trigger on the stack; when it resolves, you create a Treasure token. Later, if the Prized Statue is destroyed, sacrificed, or otherwise moved to the graveyard, a second trigger goes on the stack. Note that if the Statue is exiled directly from the battlefield, the second ability will not trigger, as it specifically requires the card to enter the graveyard.
When to Play Prized Statue
This card is best used in decks that benefit from high artifact counts or sacrifice synergies. Since it replaces its own mana cost over time, it is an excellent tool for fixing your colors early in the game. It is particularly effective if you have ways to sacrifice artifacts for additional value, as you will immediately receive a Treasure to replace the Statue.
Common Pitfalls
Players often forget that the 'dies' trigger only happens if the card reaches the graveyard. If an effect like Rest in Peace is active, Prized Statue is exiled instead of hitting the graveyard, and you will not get the second Treasure. Additionally, remember that Treasure tokens must be sacrificed and tapped to produce mana, meaning they cannot be used the same turn they are created if they enter the battlefield tapped due to other effects.
Interaction examples
Sol RingYou tap Sol Ring to pay the {2} mana cost for Prized Statue. Once Prized Statue enters the battlefield, its ability triggers, and you create a Treasure token. You now have the Statue for future sacrifice fodder and a Treasure ready to be used for mana.
Arcane SignetIf you are missing a specific color of mana despite having Arcane Signet, you can cast Prized Statue using generic mana. The resulting Treasure token can be sacrificed to add one mana of any color, helping you cast spells that your current mana base otherwise couldn't support.
TreasureWhen an opponent uses a spell to destroy your Prized Statue, it is put into the graveyard. This triggers its second ability, granting you a Treasure token. Even though you lost the Statue, you effectively 'refund' part of its cost, leaving you with a Treasure that can produce any color of mana.
