Carte Magic Shadow Rift

Shadow Rift is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.

Official card text

Target creature gains shadow until end of turn. (It can block or be blocked by only creatures with shadow.) Draw a card.

Complete guide

Shadow Rift is a classic blue utility spell that combines evasion with card advantage for just a single mana. By granting a creature the shadow keyword, you can bypass your opponent's defenses or create an impenetrable blocker against other shadowy threats.

What Shadow Rift Does

Shadow Rift is a low-cost instant that targets a creature and grants it the shadow keyword until the end of the turn. Shadow is an evasion ability: a creature with shadow can only block other creatures with shadow, and it can only be blocked by creatures with shadow. Crucially, the spell also includes the instruction to draw a card, making it a 'cantrip' that replaces itself in your hand.

Resolving the Spell Step by Step

First, you cast Shadow Rift by paying one blue mana and choosing a legal target creature on the battlefield. When the spell resolves, the target creature gains the shadow ability immediately. Finally, as the last part of the spell's resolution, you draw one card from your library. If the target creature becomes illegal before the spell resolves (for example, if it leaves the battlefield), the entire spell is countered by game rules, and you will not draw a card.

Common Mistakes

A common error is forgetting that shadow works both ways; while your creature becomes difficult to block, it also loses the ability to block any creature that does not have shadow. Additionally, players often forget that the card draw is tied to the spell resolving. If a player uses an effect to remove the target or counter the spell, the draw effect never happens.

When to Play Shadow Rift

This spell is most effective during the declare attackers step to ensure a creature gets through for lethal damage. Because it is an instant, you can also use it defensively to allow one of your creatures to block an opponent's creature that already has shadow. Since it draws a card, it is also useful to cast at the end of an opponent's turn if you simply need to dig deeper into your deck.

Interaction examples

Pushing Through Damage

You cast Shadow Rift on your own largest creature during your combat phase. Since your opponent controls no creatures with shadow, your creature becomes effectively unblockable. You then draw a card to maintain your hand size.

Interactions with Countermagic

If you cast Shadow Rift and your opponent responds by casting Counterspell, Shadow Rift is moved to the graveyard without resolving. You do not get the shadow effect on your creature, and you do not draw a card.

Negotiating a Counter

If your Shadow Rift is targeted by An Offer You Can't Refuse, the spell is countered. You will not draw a card or grant shadow, but you will create two Treasure tokens instead, which can be used for mana later.
