Carte Magic Shifting Shadow

Shifting Shadow is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.

01

Official card text

Enchant creature Enchanted creature has haste and "At the beginning of your upkeep, destroy this creature. Reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a creature card. Put that card onto the battlefield and attach Shifting Shadow to it, then put all other cards revealed this way on the bottom of your library in a random order."

Complete guide

Shifting Shadow is a chaotic Red aura that transforms your board into a rotating gallery of monsters. It forces your creatures into a cycle of destruction and rebirth, ensuring you always have a fresh, hasty threat ready to attack. This enchantment is perfect for players who love high-risk, high-reward gameplay and digging deep into their library.

A Cycle of Death and Rebirth

Shifting Shadow grants the enchanted creature haste and a mandatory upkeep trigger. When your upkeep begins, the creature is destroyed, and you immediately search your library for its replacement. This effect is powerful because it bypasses mana costs, allowing you to cheat massive creatures into play directly from your deck.

Step-by-Step Resolution

First, the upkeep trigger goes on the stack. Upon resolution, the enchanted creature is destroyed. Next, you reveal cards from the top of your library until a creature card appears. You put that creature onto the battlefield and move Shifting Shadow from the graveyard (or wherever it went if the creature was destroyed) onto the new creature. Finally, all other revealed cards are placed on the bottom of your library in a random order.

Interaction Nuances

If the enchanted creature has Indestructible, the destruction effect fails, but you still perform the rest of the ability: you find a new creature and Shifting Shadow moves to the newcomer. If you happen to have no creatures left in your library, you reveal your entire library, randomize it, and Shifting Shadow is put into the graveyard because it has nothing to enchant.

Strategic Timing

Since the trigger occurs at the beginning of your upkeep, you get the new creature immediately during your turn. Because Shifting Shadow grants haste, you can attack with the new creature right away. This makes it an excellent tool for aggressive decks that want to maintain pressure even after their board is targeted by removal.

Interaction examples

Pinging for the Win

With Impact Tremors on the battlefield, every time Shifting Shadow triggers and brings a new creature into play, you deal 1 damage to each opponent. This turns your deck's rotation into a consistent source of direct damage alongside your combat phase.

The Escape Plan

Shifting Shadow often puts many non-creature cards on the bottom of the library, but the creatures it destroys go to the graveyard. By using Underworld Breach, you can cast those fallen creatures or the Shifting Shadow itself from your graveyard, ensuring the cycle never ends even if your opponent manages to destroy the Aura.

How it works : Shifting Shadow

Original English text — Wizards of the Coast / Scryfall

  1. #1· Wizards of the Coast

If you don't reveal a creature card this way, you'll just reveal and randomize your library and Shifting Shadow becomes attached to nothing. It will be put into its owner's graveyard as a state-based action.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  2. #2· Wizards of the Coast

If Shifting Shadow can't become attached to the creature you put onto the battlefield, most likely because that creature has protection from red, it becomes attached to nothing. It will be put into its owner's graveyard as a state-based action.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  3. #3· Wizards of the Coast

If the Shifting Shadow leaves the battlefield after the triggered ability it grants has triggered but before it resolves, you'll destroy the creature it enchanted before it left the battlefield, then reveal cards and put a creature card onto the battlefield. Shifting Shadow won't become attached to it. The same is true if the enchanted creature leaves the battlefield rather than just Shifting Shadow, except that you won't destroy the creature it enchanted in that case.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  4. #4· Wizards of the Coast

If the enchanted creature can't be destroyed, most likely because that creature has indestructible, you'll still get a new creature and attach Shifting Shadow to the new creature.

No other card is named in this ruling.
