Carte Magic Snakeform

Snakeform is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.

01

Official card text

Until end of turn, target creature loses all abilities and becomes a green Snake with base power and toughness 1/1. Draw a card.

Complete guide

Snakeform is a versatile hybrid spell that can turn a terrifying threat into a harmless reptile while keeping your hand full. Whether you are looking to win a combat trade or strip a creature of its powerful static effects, this instant provides a unique layer of utility for Green and Blue mages.

What Snakeform Does

Snakeform targets a creature and applies three distinct changes until the end of the turn: it loses all abilities, its base power and toughness become 1/1, and it becomes a green Snake. As an added bonus, the spell causes you to draw a card upon resolution. Note that this effect sets the base power and toughness; any counters (like +1/+1 counters) or static buffs from other permanents will still apply on top of the 1/1 base.

Resolving the Spell Step by Step

First, you cast Snakeform by paying its mana cost and choosing a legal target. When the spell resolves, the game checks the timestamp. The creature loses all its text, including keywords like flying or lifelink. It then becomes a 1/1 green Snake. Finally, you draw a card. If the target becomes illegal before the spell resolves (for example, if it is sacrificed), the entire spell fails and you will not draw a card.

Common Mistakes

A common misconception is that Snakeform stops 'enters-the-battlefield' abilities. Because the creature is already on the battlefield for Snakeform to target it, those abilities have already triggered and cannot be prevented by this spell. Additionally, if you cast Snakeform on a creature that has a +1/+1 counter, it will be a 2/2 (1/1 base plus the counter), not a 1/1.

When to Play It

Snakeform is best used during the declare blockers step. By turning a massive attacker into a 1/1 after blocks have been declared, you can ensure your small creatures survive the trade while dealing lethal damage to the newly formed Snake. It is also excellent for removing pesky passive abilities like Hexproof (if you can target it first) or Indestructible right before a removal spell.

Interaction examples

Shrinking a Threat

You cast Snakeform on an opponent's 5/5 creature. It becomes a 1/1 green Snake with no abilities. During your combat phase, your 2/2 creature can now safely block and destroy it. You also draw a card to replace the spell you played.

The Power of Response

If you cast Snakeform and your opponent responds with Counterspell, the entire effect is negated. The target creature remains its original size and retains its abilities, and most importantly, you do not get to draw a card because Snakeform never resolved.

Strategic Removal Setup

If an opponent has a creature with an ability that prevents it from being destroyed, you can cast Snakeform to remove that ability first. Once the creature is a 1/1 Snake with no abilities, you can then follow up with Beast Within to destroy it and give them a 3/3 Beast token instead, which might be easier to manage than the original threat.

How it works : Snakeform

Original English text — Wizards of the Coast / Scryfall

  1. #1· Wizards of the Coast

The power/toughness-setting effect overwrites other effects that set power and toughness only if those effects existed before this spell resolved. It will not overwrite effects that modify power or toughness (whether from a static ability, counters, or a resolved spell or ability), nor will it overwrite effects that set power and toughness which come into existence after this spell resolves. Effects that switch the creature's power and toughness are always applied after any other power or toughness changing effects, including this one, regardless of the order in which they are created.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  2. #2· Wizards of the Coast

Snakeform doesn't counter abilities that have already triggered or been activated. In particular, there is no way to cast this to stop a creature's "At the beginning of your upkeep" or "When this creature enters" abilities from triggering.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  3. #3· Wizards of the Coast

If the affected creature gains an ability after Snakeform resolves, it will keep that ability.

No other card is named in this ruling.

  4. #4· Wizards of the Coast

If Snakeform affects a creature with changeling, the creature will lose its changeling ability, and will no longer be all creature types.

No other card is named in this ruling.
