A Mana Source with a Scaling Benefit

Twitching Doll features two activated abilities. The first is a mana ability that adds one mana of any color and places a nest counter on the creature. Because it is a mana ability, it does not use the stack and cannot be responded to by opponents. Every time you tap it for mana, you are simultaneously fueling its second ability, which checks the total number of counters—not just nest counters—upon sacrifice.

Executing the Nest Sacrifice

To activate the second ability, you must tap Twitching Doll, sacrifice it, and pay the activation cost during your main phase when the stack is empty. This ability creates a 2/2 green Spider creature token with reach for every counter that was on Twitching Doll at the moment it was sacrificed. If the Doll had other types of counters, such as +1/+1 counters, those also count toward the total number of Spiders generated.

Timing and Restrictions

A common mistake is attempting to sacrifice Twitching Doll in response to an opponent's spell or during combat. The sacrifice ability is restricted to sorcery speed, meaning you can only use it during your own turn while no other spells or abilities are waiting to resolve. Additionally, because the sacrifice is part of the cost, you cannot use the mana generated by the first ability to pay for other spells while simultaneously sacrificing it for tokens in the same step.

When to Activate

Strategic players should use Twitching Doll for mana in the early turns to accelerate their game plan. Once you have reached a high enough mana total or if you desperately need blockers with reach, you can pivot by sacrificing the Doll. This transition transforms a utility creature into a defensive wall or an offensive swarm, depending on how many turns you spent accumulating counters.
