Carte Magic Undertaker

Undertaker is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.

01

Official card text

{B}, {T}, Discard a card: Return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.

Complete guide

Undertaker is a versatile Human Spellshaper that provides consistent graveyard recursion for any black deck. By turning any card in your hand into a Raise Dead effect, it ensures your best creatures never stay in the graveyard for long.

The Art of Spellshaping

As a Spellshaper, Undertaker has an activated ability that requires three components: one black mana, tapping the creature, and discarding a card. This allows you to convert dead draws or less useful cards into the specific creature tools you need from your discard pile.

Timing and Targeting

When you activate Undertaker, you must choose a target creature card in your graveyard as you pay the costs. You cannot discard a creature card to Undertaker's ability and then immediately target that same card; the target must be selected before the discard cost is paid.

Strategic Considerations

Because Undertaker requires tapping, it is susceptible to summoning sickness and removal. It is best used at the end of your opponent's turn to maximize your resources, or during your main phase to immediately recast a powerful threat that was recently dealt with.

Interaction examples

Recovering Utility

If your Ornithopter of Paradise was destroyed earlier in the game, you can pay one black mana, tap Undertaker, and discard a card from your hand. This allows you to return Ornithopter of Paradise to your hand, letting you recast it to fix your mana on your next turn.

Recycling Death Triggers

With Blood Artist on the battlefield, you can use Undertaker to retrieve other creatures that have died. By repeatedly bringing back small creatures to be played and sacrificed again, you can trigger Blood Artist multiple times to drain your opponent's life.
