Carte Magic Arcane Adaptation

Arcane Adaptation is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.

01

Official card text

As this enchantment enters, choose a creature type. Creatures you control are the chosen type in addition to their other types. The same is true for creature spells you control and creature cards you own that aren't on the battlefield.

Complete guide

Arcane Adaptation is a powerful blue enchantment that reshapes the biological identity of your entire army. By choosing a single creature type as it enters the battlefield, you can unlock powerful tribal synergies that were never meant to coexist. Whether your cards are in your hand, on the stack, or on the field, they will all share the chosen bond.

What It Does

As Arcane Adaptation enters the battlefield, you choose one existing creature type, such as Zombie, Sliver, or Dinosaur. Every creature you control on the battlefield, every creature spell you cast, and every creature card in your graveyard, hand, or library gains that type in addition to its original types. Note that you cannot choose non-creature types like Artifact or Equipment, nor can you invent new types like 'Vampire Knight'; you must pick one official subtype.

Resolution Step-by-Step

First, the 'as enters' ability does not use the stack, meaning you choose the type the moment the spell resolves and the permanent hits the table. Second, once the choice is made, the continuous effect immediately applies across all zones. Third, because this effect applies to cards in all zones, it can satisfy tribal requirements for casting spells or searching your library. Finally, if another effect checks for a creature type as a permanent enters the battlefield, Arcane Adaptation's effect is applied first, ensuring your new creatures benefit from any relevant bonuses immediately.

Common Mistakes

A frequent error is trying to choose multiple types; you are restricted to exactly one. Additionally, players often forget that this only affects 'creature' cards. For example, a Sorcery or an Artifact that is not a creature will not gain the chosen type even if it is in your hand. Also, remember that this effect only applies to you; your opponents' cards remain their original types regardless of what you choose.

When to Play It

This card is best utilized in 'Tribal' decks that rely on specific creature types to trigger powerful abilities. It is also excellent for enabling 'Lord' effects—creatures that give +1/+1 to a specific type—to buff your entire team regardless of their original printed stats. In formats like Commander, it acts as a redundancy piece for decks that need a high density of a specific type to function correctly.

Interaction examples

Universal Identity

If you cast Arcane Adaptation and choose 'Wizard', every creature card in your deck becomes a Wizard. This means if you have an effect that lets you search for a Wizard card, you can now find any creature in your library.

Static Support

While Arcane Adaptation changes your creature types, it does not interact directly with Rhystic Study. If you have both on the field, your creatures will have their new type, and you will still have the opportunity to draw cards when your opponent casts spells, but the creature type choice does not change how Rhystic Study triggers.

Defensive Posture

If you control both cards and have chosen 'Sliver', your creatures are now Slivers. However, Propaganda's restriction remains the same: your opponents must still pay {2} for each creature attacking you, regardless of whether those attacking creatures have been granted new types by their own effects or if your creatures have changed types.
