Carte Magic Telepathy

Telepathy is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.

01

Official card text

Your opponents play with their hands revealed.

Complete guide

Telepathy is a deceptively simple Blue enchantment that strips away the secrecy of the game for a very low mana cost. By forcing your opponents to reveal their hands, you gain perfect information to navigate your turns and plan your counters. This one-mana investment ensures that you are never surprised by a hidden trick or an unexpected threat.

Continuous Information

Telepathy creates a continuous effect that changes how the game is played. As long as it is on the battlefield, your opponents must keep their hands face up on the table or clearly visible. This does not change when or how they can play their cards; it simply removes the 'hidden' status of those cards for everyone at the table.

Resolving the Enchantment

When you cast Telepathy, it goes on the stack like any other spell. Once it resolves and enters the battlefield, its static ability immediately takes effect. Opponents must reveal their current hands, and any cards they draw later must also be shown. If Telepathy leaves the battlefield, players may immediately return their cards to their private hands.

Strategic Advantages

The primary benefit of Telepathy is the removal of guesswork. You will know exactly if an opponent has a counterspell, a board wipe, or a finisher. This allows you to bait out specific responses or commit to the board with total confidence that your spells will resolve or your creatures will survive the coming turn.

Common Misconceptions

A common mistake is thinking Telepathy allows you to choose cards from an opponent's hand or forces them to discard. It does neither. It also does not affect your own hand; your cards remain hidden to your opponents unless another effect says otherwise. Furthermore, revealing a card is not the same as 'casting' it or 'discarding' it.

Interaction examples

Reacting to Hidden Threats

With Telepathy on the battlefield, you see that your opponent is holding a creature with a powerful 'enters the battlefield' ability. Because you can see it coming, you can hold up mana for Aboleth Spawn. When they eventually play their creature, you can flash in Aboleth Spawn to copy that creature's triggered ability using its Probing Telepathy feature.

Navigating Around Interaction

You have Telepathy and Mystic Remora in play. Because your opponent's hand is revealed, you can see they are holding multiple noncreature spells but lack the mana to pay for the Mystic Remora tax. This allows you to confidently decide whether to pay the cumulative upkeep for the Remora, knowing for a fact that your opponent has spells that will trigger it.

Timing Your Big Plays

You want to play Falcon, Winged Wonder to create your Redwing token, but you are afraid of a removal spell. Telepathy allows you to check your opponent's hand first. If you see the coast is clear, you can safely cast your legendary hero and begin your aerial assault without fear of an instant-speed response.
