Carte Magic Quickchange

Quickchange is one of those cards players keep asking about. Here is, in plain words, what its official text says, the rulings published by Wizards of the Coast, and the combos players actually run.

01

Official card text

Target creature becomes the color or colors of your choice until end of turn. Draw a card.

Complete guide

Quickchange is a versatile blue instant that allows you to manipulate the very identity of a creature on the battlefield. Whether you need to bypass color-based protection or satisfy specific elemental requirements, this spell provides the flexibility you need while keeping your hand full.

Choosing Your Palette

When you cast Quickchange, you choose any color or any combination of colors for the target creature. This means the creature can become mono-blue, all five colors, or even a specific combination like red and green. Note that you cannot choose 'colorless' as it is not a color. This effect lasts until the end of the current turn.

Resolution Breakdown

First, select a legal target creature as you cast the spell. Upon resolution, you declare your chosen color(s). The creature's previous colors are entirely replaced by your choice; it does not retain its original colors unless you specifically include them in your selection. Finally, you draw a card as part of the resolution, ensuring the spell replaces itself in your hand.

Artifacts and Types

A common point of confusion involves artifact creatures. Quickchange only changes a creature's color, not its card types. If you target an artifact creature and turn it green, it remains an artifact creature—it simply becomes a green artifact. It does not lose its artifact status or any other subtypes like 'Elf' or 'Soldier'.

Strategic Timing

Because Quickchange is an instant, it is best used reactively. You can use it to make a creature eligible for a specific 'destroy target [color] creature' spell or to allow your creature to block a creature with 'protection from [color].' Since it draws a card, it is rarely a wasted resource even if used purely for the cycle.

Interaction examples

Cycling for Answers

If your opponent casts a threat and you need to find a response, you can cast Quickchange on any creature on the board. As it resolves, you choose a color and draw a card. If that card is Counterspell, you have successfully used Quickchange to dig deeper into your library to find the interaction you needed.

Baiting the Stack

You cast Quickchange targeting a creature. If your opponent attempts to stop your color-shifting strategy with a noncreature spell of their own, you can respond with An Offer You Can't Refuse. This protects your Quickchange resolution and ensures you still get your color change and your card draw while your opponent is left with Treasure tokens.
