Spawnbed ProtectorHow it works & interactions with other cards

What It Does

Spawnbed Protector has a triggered ability that occurs at the beginning of your end step. It allows you to return up to one target Eldrazi creature card from your graveyard to your hand. Regardless of whether you chose a target or not, the ability also creates two 1/1 colorless Eldrazi Scion creature tokens which can be sacrificed for mana.

Step-by-Step Resolution

First, the ability triggers at the start of your end step. You must choose up to one target Eldrazi card in your graveyard; if you choose a target, it must be a valid Eldrazi creature card. As the ability resolves, if a target was chosen and is still legal, the card returns to your hand. Finally, you create two 1/1 Eldrazi Scion tokens. Importantly, if you chose a target and it becomes illegal (e.g., it is exiled from your graveyard in response), the entire ability fails and you get no tokens.

Common Mistakes

A common mistake is thinking you must have a target to get the tokens. You can choose 'zero' targets, which ensures you get your Scions even if your graveyard is empty. However, if you do name a target and your opponent removes that specific card from your graveyard before the ability resolves, you will lose out on the tokens because the ability is countered by the rules.

When to Play It

Since the ability triggers during the end step, you get immediate value the turn you cast it. It is best used when you have high-impact Eldrazi in your graveyard to recur, or when you need to stabilize your board with blockers that can later be used to ramp into even larger spells.

Interaction examples

Recycling the Swarm

Eldrazi Scion

If you have an Eldrazi Scion that died earlier, Spawnbed Protector cannot target it because the Scion was a token and no longer exists in the graveyard. However, Spawnbed Protector will still create two new Eldrazi Scion tokens during your end step, effectively replacing the lost unit and adding another.

Interaction with Non-Eldrazi

Meteor Golem

If Meteor Golem is in your graveyard, Spawnbed Protector cannot target it because Meteor Golem is a Golem, not an Eldrazi. You can still resolve the ability by choosing zero targets to receive your two Eldrazi Scion tokens.

Token Production Synergy

Myr Battlesphere

While Spawnbed Protector and Myr Battlesphere both create tokens, they function differently. The Protector creates Eldrazi Scion tokens at every one of your end steps, providing a steady stream of mana or blockers, whereas the Battlesphere creates its Myr tokens only once upon entering the battlefield.
